Among all penicillin antibiotics Amoxicillin is one of the most top selling and prescribed medication.

Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic which acts bactericidally. Bactericidal effect is achieved due to inhibiting the enzyme called peptidoglycan – murein which is responsible for the formation of bacterial cell wall.

Amoxicillin is active against a wide variety of microorganisms including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp, aerobioc gram-negative bacteria such as eisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Bacillus anthracis, Enterococcus species and S. saprophyticus. Amoxicillin does not act on microorganisms which produce beta-lactamases which disturb the structure of all beta-lactam antibiotics.

A combination of amoxicillin-clavulanate is indicated for the treatment of infection caused by drug-resistant microorganisms. Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of pyelonephritis, pyelitis, cystitis, urethritis, gonorrhea.
